Sacred City of Kandy,Sri Lanka.

 This sacred Buddhist site, popularly known as the city of Senkadagalapura, was the last capital of the Sinhala kings whose patronage enabled the Dinahala culture to flourish for more than 2,500 years until the occupation of Sri Lanka by the British in 1815. It is also the site of the Temple of the Tooth Relic (the sacred tooth of the Buddha), which is a famous pilgrimage site.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve,Sri Lanka.

                              

Encompassing the last extensive patch of primary lowland rainforest in Sri Lanka, Sinharaja Forest Reserve is situated in the south-west lowland wet zone of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is home to 830 endemic species, of which 217 trees and woody climbers are found in the low land wet zone.A number of threatened, endangered and rare species inhabit in the reserve like- leopard (Panthera pardus), Indian elephant (Elephas maxiumus), endemic purple-faced Langur (Presbytis senex), Sri Lanka wood pigeon (Columba torringtoni) and many more.

A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this cave monastery with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 m2 ) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues

Ancient City of Polonnaruwa,Sri Lanka.

Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century.

The property comprises the Peak Wilderness Protected Area, the Horton Plains National Park and the Knuckles Conservation Forest. . In case of the Peak Wilderness Protected Area, the major human use is from around two million pilgrims who visit the Adam’s Peak annually.The region is considered as  a super biodiversity hotspot

Ancient City of Sigiriya,Sri Lanka.

The ruins of the capital built by the  King Kashyapa I (477–95) lie on the steep slopes and at the summit of a granite peak standing some 180m high (the 'Lion's Rock) which dominates the jungle from all sides.
The whole face of the hill appears to have been a gigantic picture gallery. However, most have been lost forever. More frescoes, different from those on the rock face, can be seen elsewhere, for example on the ceiling of the location called the "Cobra Hood Cave".
The line and style of application of the paintings differ from Anuradhapura paintings.  Other paintings of the Anuradhapura period contain similar approaches to painting, but do not have the sketchy lines of the Sigiriya style,  The true identity of the ladies in these paintings still have not been confirmed. These pictures have a close resemblance to paintings seen in the Ajanta caves in India.

Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications,Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankans’ greet you with ‘Ayubowan’, a word that means much more than just ‘hello’. It means, may you have long life and be happy always.
Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions.It was founded by Portuguese in 16th century.

Sacred City of Anuradhapura,Sri Lanka.

This sacred city was established around with a cutting from the 'tree of enlightenment-  Buddha's fig tree- brought there in the 3rd century B.C. by Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns. Anuradhapura, a Ceylonese political and religious capital that flourished for 1,300 years, was abandoned after an invasion in 993. Hidden away in dense jungle for many years, the splendid site, with its palaces, monasteries and monuments, is now accessible once again.Thank you Nimasha for the nice card and by the way first one from Sri Lanka.
