Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site,USA.

Cahokia Mounds, some 13 km north-east of St Louis, Missouri, is the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico. It was occupied primarily during the Mississippian period (800–1400), when it covered nearly 1,600 ha and included some 120 mounds. It is a striking example of a complex chiefdom society, with many satellite mound centres and numerous outlying hamlets and villages. This agricultural society may have had a population of 10–20,000 at its peak between 1050 and 1150. Primary features at the site include Monks Mound, the largest prehistoric earthwork in the Americas, covering over 5 hectares and standing 30 meters high.

Rabat, Modern Capital and Historic City: a Shared Heritage,Morocco.

Located on the Atlantic coast in the north-west of Morocco, the site is the product of a fertile exchange between the Arabo-Muslim past and Western modernism. The inscribed city encompasses the new town conceived and built under the French Protectorate from 1912 to the 1930s, including royal and administrative areas, residential and commercial developments and the Jardins d’Essais botanical and pleasure gardens. It also encompasses older parts of the city dating back to the 12thcentury. The new town is one of the largest and most ambitious modern urban projects built in Africa in the 20th century and probably the most complete. The older parts include Hassan Mosque (begun in 1184) and the Almohad ramparts and gates, the only surviving parts of the project for a great capital city of the Almohad caliphate as well as remains from the Moorish, or Andalusian, principality of the 17thcentury.

Itchan Kala,Uzbekistan.

Itchan Kala is the inner town (protected by brick walls some 10 m high) of the old Khiva oasis, which was the last resting-place of caravans before crossing the desert to Iran. Although few very old monuments still remain, it is a coherent and well-preserved example of the Muslim architecture of Central Asia. There are several outstanding structures such as the Djuma Mosque, the mausoleums and the madrasas and the two magnificent palaces built at the beginning of the 19th century by Alla-Kulli-Khan.

The coming of war, declared on 4 August 1914, caught most Australians by surprise even though there had been a climate for war for many years.In the war between Europe’s two major trading nations, Britain and Germany , Australia supported the British.

Pledgeing  20,000 soldiers for the war, the new Government watched an extraordinary rush to enlist all around the country and soon promised an increase in the expeditionary force to take the total to
50,000 men.
Very much thankful to Krissy for the classy Maxicard with First Day Cancellation.
To commemorate the Centenary of WWI ,set of 5 stamps is issued by Australia Post.

Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin,Armenia.

The two monastic complexes of Haghpat and Sanahin are a serial property situated in the Lori Marz (region) of Armenia dating to the 10th to 13th centuries.

 

The monastery of Haghpat, founded by Queen Khosrovanush (wife of the Armenian King Ashot III the Merciful) in AD 976, consists of one narthex, two corridor-sepulchers, a refectory, a scriptorium, the Chapel of Hamazasp, a belfry, several chapel-tombs and cross-stones (khachkars), all surrounded by a towered rampart.

Thank you Boris for the beautiful card with nice stamps re-sent. A rare gesture. The card dated 9.9.21 reached me on 26.2.22 and as the saying goes -Better late than never.

The Sanahin monastery contains St Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), St Amenaprkich (Redeemer) and St Grigor Churches, narthexes, fore-church, scriptorium, belfry and academy. St Astvatsatsin Church (AD 928-944) is a central-domed, cross-shaped example of Armenian medieval classical architecture that reached to its perfection in the main building of the complex – St Amenaprkich Church. It was built between AD 957 and 966 under the patronage of Queen Khosrovanush (wife of King Ashot III the Merciful).Heartfelt thanks to Sini for the superb site card affixed with elegant, unique shaped stamps. The card was mailed from Finland as she could not get it posted from Armenia. Once again thank you for acceding to my request.

Historic Fortified City of Carcassonne,France.

Since the pre-Roman period, a fortified settlement has existed on the hill where Carcassonne now stands. In its present form it is an outstanding example of a medieval fortified town, with its massive defences encircling the castle and the surrounding buildings, its streets and its fine Gothic cathedral. Carcassonne is also of exceptional importance because of the lengthy restoration campaign undertaken by Viollet-le-Duc, one of the founders of the modern science of conservation.My first card received from Aleksandra. 2017 Stamp- The 100th Anniversary of USA Entering World War I

Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang.China.

 

   

Seat of supreme power for over five centuries (1416-1911), the Forbidden City in Beijing, with its landscaped gardens and many buildings (whose nearly 10,000 rooms contain furniture and works of art), constitutes a priceless testimony to Chinese civilization during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Imperial Palace of the Qing Dynasty in Shenyang consists of 114 buildings constructed between 1625–26 and 1783. It contains an important library and testifies to the foundation of the last dynasty that ruled China, before it expanded its power to the centre of the country and moved the capital to Beijing. This palace then became auxiliary to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. This remarkable architectural edifice offers important historical testimony to the history of the Qing Dynasty and to the cultural traditions of the Manchu and other tribes in the north of China.

Rapa Nui National Park,Chile.

Rapa Nui, the indigenous name of Easter Island, bears witness to a unique cultural phenomenon. A society of Polynesian origin that settled there c. A.D. 300 established a powerful, imaginative and original tradition of monumental sculpture and architecture, free from any external influence. From the 10th to the 16th century this society built shrines and erected enormous stone figures known as moai , which created an unrivalled cultural landscape that continues to fascinate people throughout the world.

Butrint,Albania.

It is located in the south of Albania approximately 20km from the modern city of Saranda and has a special atmosphere created by a combination of archaeology, monuments and nature in the Mediterranean.The major ruin from the paleo-Christian era is the baptistery, an ancient Roman monument adapted to the cultural needs of Christianity. Its floor has a beautiful mosaic decoration.

Cristina in Italy who sent this card writes that the baptistery with mosaics are covered with sand just to preserve them from rain and Sun.So she was able to see  them just on the postcard.

Fray Bentos Industrial Landscape,Uruguay.

The Frigorífico Anglo del Uruguay was a meatpacking plant located at Fray Bentos, Uruguay, on the Uruguay River bank.

In 1924, the Vestey group purchased the old facilities of Liebig Extract of Meat Company and the production went under a new name. Products were sold in Europe under the brand name Fray Bentos.

During its peak period, El Anglo had 5,000 workers whose ranks included English, Belgians, Russians, Spanish and Italians. It finally closed in 1979 after Europe and the United States had cut back their purchases from Latin America.

There are more than 40 million donkeys in the world, mostly in underdeveloped countries, where they are used principally as draught or pack animals.  Small numbers of donkeys are kept for breeding or as pets in developed countries.
