Rideau Canal,Canada.

The oldest continuously operated canal system in North America, it connects Ottawa, on the Ottawa River, to Kingston, on Lake Ontario. It opened in 1832 as a precaution in case of war with the United States; designation includes several defensive works in Kingston. It is one of the first canals to be designed specifically for steam-powered vessels and also features an ensemble of fortifications. The canal is still in use, with much of its original structure intact.
